The Senior Student Housing for Wesleyan University was designed by Smith Edwards Architects as part of a successful design/build competition in collaboration with Enterprise Builders. The concept was to create houses that would allow Senior students to live in independent apartments similar to a living situation they might have after leaving college. Within the two new buildings there are five apartments – four 5-bedroom duplexes and one 4-bedroom flat.

The design of the buildings was required to respond to several different conditions. The buildings are in an historic district and so needed to be compatible in scale and material with their surroundings. They also needed to create a homelike environment for their student occupants. And at the University’s direction, these buildings needed to be constructed quickly and affordably. The design/build team was able to meet or exceed all these requirements.
