The site for this project included two derelict warehouse buildings set approximately 100’ apart. Smith Edwards Architects conceived of the idea of salvaging these buildings and linking them with a new connecting building that would house the Harley-Davidson motorcycle showroom and parts warehouse. The two existing structures then were renovated to contain retail space and service bays.

An additional benefit derived from the salvage of the two existing structures was a ready-made “industrial” aesthetic that the architects carried throughout the rest of the project. All floors are stained concrete, steel and ductwork are left exposed and unfinished, and the existing “distressed” finishes (crumbling brick, peeling paint) were left in place. The building is a perfect match for the tough, outlaw image of the Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

The Cookhouse Café occupies the southeast corner of the facility, and offers meals to Harley devotees in a space that continues the industrial aesthetic.
