The Renbrook School is an independent school occupying a magnificent site on Avon Mountain in West Hartford. The campus is composed of the former Rentschler mansion, which houses the school administration, and a collection of newer classroom buildings. The school had never undertaken a planning effort for its site or structures, and with a growing enrollment and need for new facilities found itself in need of additional space and site improvements.

Smith Edwards Architects undertook a comprehensive Master Plan that examined the entire campus and made recommendations for traffic control, parking, site utilities, handicapped accessibility and ideal sites
for new buildings. Smith Edwards served as architects for all three subsequent phases of construction, providing the school with new facilities for gymnastics, the arts, computers and science, early-childhood education, and languages. The final phase of construction (shown left) is an addition to the Administration and Admissions building, and houses a cafeteria and auditorium. The design embraces the historic courtyard and provides a welcoming new entrance to the school.
