The new administrative office for the cemetery is the restored and renovated chapel built at its main entrance in 1882. The gateway complex includes the original gates, gate houses and chapel all designed by Hartford's most prominent 19th century architect, George Keller. Cedar Hill Cemetery is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The chapel has been restored after being closed for many years. Its granite and brick walls have been cleaned, a new slate roof provided as well as new mechanical and electrical systems. The building has been brought into code conformance and provided with handicap access. Its chief glories are the restored original stained glass windows and period woodwork, with new interior decorative finishes and furnishings. For the present, the building serves as the office for the cemetery, allowing the gatehouses to return to their intended purpose. The project was designed to permit the chapel's use to revert to its original function, if the office moves elsewhere. |
