An existing unoccupied retail space at the first floor of
a parking structure in Hartford was rehabilitated to house the Aetna Center
for Families. The Center’s mission is to strengthen families and
the neighborhood by offering courses and programs for adults and children.
Smith Edwards Architects created a strong visual street presence for the
Center by creating the colorful “stick house” vestibule, and
by adding a 200 foot long blue wave decal along the glass storefronts.
On the interior, blue-tinted light moves across the floor and walls throughout
the day. A storefront-type glazing system used for many of the interior
office and classroom walls allows for natural light to enter deep within
the building and for a visual connection to the street. In addition, the
storefront glazing allows pedestrians to view the services and benefits
offered by the Center.
