For more than 100 years The Gray Lodge Shelter for Women, located in the historic Calvin Day House on Spring Street in Hartford, CT, has provided services for adolescent girls and young women. Together, the Shelter for Women and Smith Edwards Architects came up with a plan to improve the buildings livability and functionality by adding approximately 4,300 square feet of updated and modernized kitchen and classroom spaces as well as restored living spaces and code conforming common areas. Special attention was placed on the exterior façade and upper floor addition to give the appearance of a seamless continuation of the existing building. This included matching the original brick and replicating the deep overhangs and brackets of the roofline.
